News from the Hofmann Lab



April 2019 - Many Hofmann lab PhD students receive fellowships!! Xochitl Clare and Jannine Chamorro are both awarded the NSF GRFP! Jannine Chamorro was also awarded a PADI foundation fellowship to continue her work on mussels. Logan Kozal was awarded a Schmidt Family Foundation fellowship to mentor an undergrad on a project on green shell mussels in New Zealand. 

March 15, 2019 - New Hofmann lab publication led by former student Dr. Umi Hoshijima comes out in Frontiers in Marine Science. 

February 23-March 1 2019 - Hofmann lab members represent at the ASLO Planet Water meeting in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Dr. Hofmann and PhD student Terence Leach present on their experience leading the Ocean Global Change Bio REU program. Dr. Marie Strader and Terence Leach also present in the Marine Environmental Epigenetics session. 

October 1-3 2018- Dr. Hofmann organizes as session on 'Eco-evolutionary dynamics in marine LTERs' at the LTER All Scientists Meeting in Pacific Grove, CA where postdoc Marie Strader gave a talk. PhD students Logan Kozal, Terence Leach, Xochitl Clare and Jannine Chamorro present posters. 

September 11 2018- Hofmann lab travels to Bodega Marine Lab for a joint lab meeting

July 15-20 2018- PhD student Juliet Wong, postdoc Marie Strader and Dr. Hofmann (meeting organizer and chair) attend the Ocean Global Change Biology Gordon Conference in Waterville Valley New Hampshire.  

July 14-19 2018- PhD students Terence Leach and Logan Kozal attend the Environmental Genomics bioinformatics course at MDI Biological Lab

June 2018- The lab welcomes 4 summer REU students through our Ocean Global Change Biology REU program 

May 2018- We have a new Dr. in the house! PhD candidate Umi Hoshijima successfully defended his PhD thesis! He is continuing his work with a postdoc at UCSC. He was also recently highlighted by the EEMB department. Go Umi! 

April 5-6 2018- Dr. Hofmann travels to Texas A&M to give a plenary talk on the lab's transgenerational work on purple sea urchins at the Ecological Integration Symposium 

April 2018- PhD student Logan Kozal is awarded the competitive NSF GRFP! 


March 2018- PhD student Terence Leach is awarded the prestigious Ford Foundation Predoctoral Fellowship!

March 25, 2018- New Hofmann lab research
led by PhD candidate Juliet Wong is published in Molecular Ecology and highlighted in the UCSB current.

March 2018- The lab is happy to welcome Sam Bogan as a new PhD student starting fall 2018!

February 2018- Gretchen represents the lab at the 2018 Ocean Sciences Meeting in Portland, OR

January 2018- Graduate student Xochitl Clare attends the Gordon Research Conference on Predator-Prey Interactions in Ventura, CA

January-February 2018- New TGP experiment on purple urchins has begun! Stay tuned.
